I agree, A could be the answer because the South wanted slavery to continue and feared that the next president would be a person who would abolish slavery and that he's from the Union states meaning from the North. The people from the North didn't depend on slavery so abolishing slavery would not hurt them since they didn't have plantations to fret for.
