The most common use of alkanes is as natural gas which is mainly used for heating and cooking. Alkanes are also used in the production of ethane which is the main raw material used in the production of polyethylene.

@khadeeja Your answer is not really correct, it is true that methane is an alkane and it is used as a fuel but you didnt really provide a very good definition of an alkane.

Alkanes are a class of molecules that consist completely of carbon that is saturated with hydrogen. The general molecular formula for an alkane is:

\[ C_{n}H_{2n+2}\]

where, n is just a number.

You should note that when a molecule ends with the suffix, "ane" then it is probably an alkane. For exmaple, hexane, octane, ethane, methane etc.
