for converting units I like to write it like this:
$$\frac{ 846 km }{ 1 hr } * \frac{ ? mi }{ ? km }$$
you can see how the km would cancel out since they are present both in the numerator and the denominator, leaving mi/hr as the final units. The only thing that is missing is the numbers for the ratio of miles to km. When he said conversion factors he's talking about that ratio.
