OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

Why should I learn math?

OpenStudy (doggy):

because pie

OpenStudy (confusionist):

Because if you drop out of school you'll be able to count your money that you get from people on the street? :o

OpenStudy (doggy):

or count how many cheeseburgers you sell to people at mc donalds

OpenStudy (doggy):

the possibilities are endless!

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

Why do I care how many cheeseburgers I sell to people at mcdonalds?

OpenStudy (doggy):

pfft, why shouldn't you care? Pie.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why does a mountaineer climb mountain ?

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

Exactly. So why do I need to learn math? I'm not a mathematician.

OpenStudy (doggy):

Everybody uses math whether they realize it or not. Shoppers use math to calculate change, tax, and sales prices. Cooks use math to modify the amount a recipe will make. Vacationers use math to find time of arrivals and departures to plan their trips. Even homeowners use math to determine the cost of materials when doing projects.

OpenStudy (doggy):

i copied and pasted that cause im lazy.

OpenStudy (doggy):

Pie.

OpenStudy (confusionist):

That's deep, Doggy.

OpenStudy (confusionist):

Oh, just kidding. Cheater.

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

I don't see no algebra there. Why do I have to learn algebra?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol math has many uses does not mean everyone must learn it. some ppl practice math wid devotion cuz it is interesting and gives some pleasure everytime they grasp a new complex concept hummm

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

So math, not useful to me, is not necessary to be learned by me, correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Math is everything. Each pulse of world realated to math

OpenStudy (doggy):

sounds like some kind of religion the way you put it

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

So, how can one ignorant in the field of math, still survive, and thrive in a world dominated by such a subject?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there are levels of surviving. to just survive i guess u just need food/cloth/shelter

OpenStudy (anonymous):

everyone related to math one in some way

OpenStudy (anonymous):

math is not useful in general... math is luxury :P

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

Why then, are we forced to learn it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in school we're forced to study all subjects (that gives basics/general idea of everything) however, you're free to choose the subjects you're interested in ur higher studies right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"math is luxury" last fun from 2013 tahnks :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

without basic maths you cannot survive

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

Yeah, yet I know basic maths. Why do we spend 12+ years learning math when we only need the first 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think calculus is necessary even if one chooses a non-math career like : liberal arts / commerce/medicine/microbiology - to analyze markets / trends. I feel basic math doesnt just mean add/sub/mult/div ;) just my thoughts....

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

I'd have to disagree with you here. I know plenty of people that don't understand calculus and are living long, happy lives without knowledge of it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree wid you on that. I was saying the same thing. Not all careers require math. It only helps you if you have math background. It is strictly not necessary.

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

Why do we force everyone to learn so much unnecessary math then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There is no unnecessary math upto 12th grade syllabus. Its all basics only. One need to know the basics. I know many illiterate people who are doing well in some businesses. Should I care to ask myself, Is formal education required ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Syllabus for students is designed keeping in mind the IQ's of students in a particular region, and the overall idea of students on rest of the planet. So, syllabus must be useful to the students, and at the same time be competitive wid other regions/countries. If we delete math after 3rd grade, our students cannot compete wid the students of other countries. Its not a matter of survival/death. Its one level higher than that...

OpenStudy (dan815):

because math is fun

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Math stinks, but what's the use of complaining when we can't change the fact that we are still going to have to learn it.

OpenStudy (adrynicoleb):

Noob =.=
