Describe the relationship between substrate concentration and the initial reaction rate of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction. Is this a linear relationship? What happens to the initial reaction rate as substrate concentration increases?
The relationship is not linear. When there are many molecules of substrate available to a very few molecules of enzyme - each individual enzyme molecule is able to find a substrate molecule and bind it. So the initial rate of enzyme activity is relatively high. Contrast that to the situation where there are many enzyme molecules in the solution but not much available substrate - it is much more likely that the enzymes won't be catalysing any reactions because they have no substrate molecules on which to act.
