Methane: Currently, methane is at a smaller concentration than water vapor and carbon dioxide, but it is more damaging than both combined in its ability to absorb solar radiation and trap heat. Earth’s rising temperatures are slowly melting the layers of frozen permafrost in the Arctic. This permafrost was once ancient wetlands filled with layers of decomposing organic matter. Methane is a by-product of decomposition. It releases into the air as the permafrost melts. Methane also releases into the air from mining activity. It opens pockets of methane gas trapped underground.
