Eukaryotic cells are much larger and much more complex than prokaryotic cells. Eukaryotic cells have a true nucleus, while prokaryotes do not. Eukaryotic DNA is linear, while prokaryotic DNA is circular. Eukaryotic cells are filled with a large, complex collection of organelles, many of them enclosed in their own membranes, while prokaryotic cells contains no membrane-bound organelles that are independent of the plasma membrane. This is a very significant difference, and the source of the vast majority of the greater complexity of the eukaryotic cell.

1. the genome of prokaryotes comprises a single covalently closed circular DNA molecule/chromosome whereas in eukaryotes the genome is fragmented into a number of chromosomes.
