The worst case scenario is that it won't perform its function like before, but it won't die unless it still uses the mRNA.

Can you describe the function of mRNA?

If you can, what would happen if the mRNA was so-badly mis-copied that it now coded for a protein that is lethal?

Do you know about tRNAs and the degenerate codon code that selects amino acids based on nucleotide triplets in the mRNA?

If you do, what's the consequence to the mRNA if, i.e. one of the codons for Alanine is mis-written in the mRNA using a different codon for Alanine?
