Here's an idea: A thirteen year old girl has a pet panatee (panda/manatee crossbreed. Don't ask me how that happened.).The panatee loves the girl very. very much and the girl loves the panatee just as much. Each night before bed they alternate telling each other stories. One night the girl tells a story, the next night the panatee tells a story. (Don't ask me how the animal can talk. It's fiction, people!) Let the bedtime stories lead up to the next event or tell a story that's similar, but hidden when strung together( foreshadowing) - the girl dies. The panatee is heartbroken wishing upon a silver stone that is given to him by a kindly, cryptic elderly turtle lady that the girl would live again. It didn't work. She's still dead. Never to live again. The panatee finds a locket at the bottom of the river that belonged to the girl. The panatee opens it gently with his sharp panatee claws revealing a picture of the girl and he. An owl ties it around his neck. He and the wise, kind owl become friends. Soon the panatee dies. The owl wears the locket mournfully around it's neck opening it to find a picture of the girl, the manatee and the owl inside. He makes another friend in a young, sprightly sea turtle. The same thing happens. The owl dies. The little turtle finding his picture along with the others in the locket that he holds close to his heart. Have the same process happen a few times, but make each friendship unique and the situations different. In anger of her friend's unfair death the last bearer of the locket - a lioness - throws it to the ground unleashing the previous bearers spirit's which were within. Just an outline. It turned out longer than i expected. I think it's a pretty cool idea. I love panatees. I'm obsessed.
