since we have a vertical parabola we want
to use the standard equation
(x -h)^2 = 4p (y-k)   which opens upward or downward.

directrix :   y = k - p
focus :  (h, k + p ) 
vertex : (h,k)
notice that the vertex is halfway between the focus and the directrix
