OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

A plant nursery is growing a tree that is 3ft tall and grows at an average rate of 1ft per year. Another tree at the nursery is 4ft tall and grows at an average rate of 0.5ft per year. After how many years will the trees be the same height?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you call \(x\) as the number of years, then the height of the first tree is \[h=x+3\] and the height of the second is \[h=.5x+4\] set them equal and solve for \(x\) i.e. solve \[x+3=.5x+4\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they really stretch for these word problems, don't they?

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

So x=2?
