Greenhouse gases remain in the upper layer of the atmosphere and create sort of a covering around the earth that prevents heat from escaping earth's surface. They get the name from the greenhouse which is a structure built to keep heat in for plants. This will explain more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenhouse_gas
