27 million immigrants came to the U.S. between 1870 and 1920. They jammed into eastern cities. There were millions coming off the farms to work in the factories that were built as the Industrial Revolution hit the U.S. Increasing industrialization that drew people to cities which resulted in a growth in population; and the increasing arrival of more immigrants.
