\(a+(-a)=a-a=0\) subtraction is just addition of the opposite. opposites add to 0. in equations and inequalities you can add or subtract the same amount from both sides without changing the nature of the underlying equality or inequality. ex. x-3 = 5 => x-3 +3 = 5 + 3 => x +[(-3)+3] = 5 + 3 => x + 0 = 8 => x = 8
