Well, English uses a large amount of words from many different languages, such as latin and yet it doesn't have any existing words to explain the term. You will need a large amount of knowledge about the languages that make up the english language to understand it. Which is the bottom layer of the cake.

Understanding these roots will help you build the other layers which are words, sentences, paragraphs, ideas, context, techniques, and so on. You'll need to know these when you're studying English. You need to understand the layer before the layer you're working on before you can understand the current layer you're a working on fully.
