Why do you think many students make sign errors on this type of problem? What would be your advice to a student who has trouble with the signs?

what type of problem ? Maybe because they are getting the rules for subtracting/adding signs mixed up with the rules for multiplying/dividing signs.

If that is the case, my advice would be to learn the sign rules for both adding/subtracting and multiplying/dividing.
