OpenStudy (sidmanfu):

There are seven numbers in a set of data. The mean and median are 7. The mode is 4 and occurs 3 times. Find the numbers. Explain your method.

OpenStudy (sidmanfu):

plz help me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i believe the numbers are 4,4,4,7,8,10, & 12 4 occurs 3 times so three odfthe numbers are already there for you 7 is the median so it has to be one of the numbers 4+4+4+7=19 because the are 7 numbers and the mean is 7. 7x7=49 49-19=30 8,10, & 12 make up 30

OpenStudy (sidmanfu):

thank you EmilyGiron :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your welcome (:

1. 4 2. 4 (must be the first three because it is in order of size) 3. 4 4. 7 (must be in the middle because it is the median) 5. 6. 7. ^^ write out what you know (in order of size) To make the average also 7 we need another three numbers that will even out the 4s. 4 is 3 below 7 so we need 3 more numbers 3 above 7 to complete the set. 4, 4, 4, 7, 10, 10, 10 Is my set Both of our answers are correct. The reason they ask you to explain is so that they know that you know how it works. The exact answer is not important.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the last 3 number dont have to be 8, 10, & 12 but the have to be greater then 7 and add to 30

OpenStudy (sidmanfu):

oh that makes sense now :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Riddellikins it cant be 10 10 and 10 because it would then be the mode that occurs 3 times like the #4

OpenStudy (sidmanfu):

yes thats true @Riddellikins

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good point. :P I didn't see that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

glad i could help
