Which word or phrase best describes the climate and terrain of the Sahara in northern Africa?

Desert, arid, dry, etc. It is mostly flat with scattered peaks and plateaus. There are floodplains along the Nile River in the northeast and the Atlas Mountains in the Northwest. Other than that there isn't much that stands out, although there is some coastal plains/lowlands north of the Atlas mountains along the Mediterranean coast. Its just an enormous desert otherwise.
