Following the French Revolution of 1848, Realism really began to take predominance as an artistic form. It essentially a reaction against the Romanticism of the time, which usually portrayed a higher lifestyle and (hah) romanticized the common people. Instead, Realism was meant to "portray" the true consequences of life for the common folk in an industrial era.
