A formal description and an informal description. Formal would be arranged in a strict format (describing top before bottom, outside before inside, etc.) while informal description might be more impressionistic with a more relaxed organizational structure (first impressions before later impressions). Another two types of description might be a physical description and a description of a process, called a process analysis.
