2x + 4 + 3x = –3x + 14 + 3x
5x + 4 = 14
5x + 4 + 4 = 14 + 4
5x = 18
5x(divided by)5 = 18(divided by)5
x= 18/5

fizzle:
2x + 4 = –3x + 14
2x + 4 – 2x = –3x + 14 – 2x
4 = 14 – 5x
4 – 14 = 14 – 5x – 14
–12 = –5x
–12 + 5 = –5x + 5
–7 = x
