Why did Lincoln issue the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862?

He issued the Emancipation Proclamation to win the war. He knew that freeing slaves would cause another thing for the Confederacy to deal with, not to mention the slaves would want to help the Union after what that did for them. However, Lincoln also stated that if he could win the war without freeing the slaves, he'd do it, that if he could free some and still win, he would, and that if he could free some but not all and still win, he would. It's a very controversial issue that can have many different responses.
