Can someone explain Conversion Math to me in a problem?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

By conversion math - do you mean how do you convert miles to kilometers? or Converting numbers to a different number base?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like in cups to table spoons, table spoons to cups let me screen shot

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

I don't know exactly what I am to input according to that screen shot but I can tell you how to do conversions. How many tablespoons in a cup? 1 cup = 8 ounces 1 ounce = 2 tablespoons 1 cup x 8 ounces / cup x 2 tablespoons / ounce = 8 * 2 = 16 tablespoons

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

It looks a lot better when shown this way. Notice how the units "cancel out" from numerator to denominator, etc. |dw:1389132649283:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ah ok.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Is that clear to you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kinda. I just dont know how to do my problem

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

What exactly is the problem (the screen shot doesn't make that too clear).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have to Scale the recipe to make half the amount, dividing each ingredient by 2. the ariginal # was 1 but it told me to do 1*3 which equals 3, so 3/2=1.5. But im confused on what to do about the conversion math part. like what does it want me to do?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Yes, that screen snot does not seem to have all the information you need. Do you have the original recipe?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes 1 cup peanut butter 1 cup sugar 1 egg 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 cup chocolate chips

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

And you have to divide everything by two correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no. I multiply each # by 3, then divide by 2

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

So, you are increasing everything by 1.5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm........idk anymore im confused o.o i thought that the number its self was 1.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1*3=3/2=1.5

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Originally: 1 cup peanut butter 1 cup sugar 1 egg 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 cup chocolate chips Increased by 1.5 1.5 cup peanut butter 1.5 cup sugar 1.5 egg 2.5 teaspoons baking soda 1.5 cup chocolate chips I believe it says to omit ingredients that aren't cups, teaspoons, (for example 1 egg) so that makes the recipe 1.5 cup peanut butter 1.5 cup sugar 2.5 teaspoons baking soda 1.5 cup chocolate chips

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ah ok. so now what?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

I'm beginning to think that the purpose of all this is learning to use that program so that it can make the changes automatically for you.
