Meiji Restoration. It was named after the new child emperor.This marked the end of the feudal system under the Tokugawa Shogunate and completely eliminated the samurai class. Japan was so fearful of becoming a colony of a western power, that they were able to modernize very quickly and became a world power by the early 20th century. Public schools were set up and they created a conscription army.
