I am by no means an expert so I cannot help you beyond the simplest answer. However, three major developments in the last two centuries include cameras themselves, color photography, and then digital photography. Photography has been around for much longer as I'm sure you are aware, but the camera as we understand it today is much newer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photography#Precursor_technologies
