preguntar means to ask a question
pedir means to ask for something as in a request

Here you need pedir.

yo pido
tu pides
el pide
nosotros pedimos
vosotros pedis
ellos piden <--- you need this, third person, plural

but say you're asking can you please pass the salt, that uses pedir?

Think of it this way:

pregunta ---> question
preguntar ---> to question, meaning to ask a question

pedido ---> request
pedir ---> to request something
