Can someone please describe protagonists for me.. Round or flat, satic or Dynamic. Please explain them so I can understand better(:
Flat characters, also called two-dimensional characters, are often those who exist only to fulfill a need in the story. They have little personality, existing mainly by their actions as they serve the story. Often they're stereotypes--the corrupt politician, the TV reporter, the demanding boss who doesn't understand what's involved in the job, the clueless buddy. They may be foils for more important characters, or receptacles for information--having your main character tell his buddy all about something tells the reader, too. Round characters seem like real people. They may be presumed to have lives beyond the scope of the story--families, jobs, opinions, secrets, hopes, disappointments, fears, hang-ups, sex lives, even musical tastes and social views. Often these aspects of their lives play no part in the plot but are peppered over it to lend verisimilitude. It's also a way to misdirect the reader if she knows Jake was once frightened by a snake and later, must enter a snake-filled plane--if that fact is one of hundreds of bits of information we know about Jake, presented with no more seeming importance than the fact that he thinks the Stones are the best rock band ever, that he's allergic to nuts, that he prefers Danish modern furniture, that his favorite ice cream is Cherry Garcia, and that his penmanship is really pretty. A dynamic character is one who is not the same person s/he was before the story happened. It's often a personal growth, a new way to consider or regard something once feared or hated, or a problem resolved. But it doesn't have to be anything that positive. A character is still dynamic if the events in the story leave him filled with hate for a particular person or group, or she ends up fearing and distrusting all men. A static character is one who does not change or grow in relation to the story. At the end, whatever events have touched that character have not affected him or her.
