In the tissues of the lungs, blood vessels cover the tiny air sacs called alveoli. Here, the oxygen is exchanged with the carbon dioxide being dumped by the blood. As part of the circulatory system, the heart pumps the blood to the lungs, and then to the rest of the body through arteries and veins, to deliver the oxygen to all the cells and pick up the carbon dioxide.
