Simplify the following problem using the distributive property: 3x+4y+3(x-y)-4x Show each step in your calculations. Justify each of your steps using number properties. (make sure to name each number property)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you need to distribute the 3 to (x-y), or multiply 3 times (x-y) then group like terms and simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could you explain a little further please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x+4y+3x-3y-4x By the way. Does all this equal zero in the original problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooh okay i see. It doesn't say what it equals out to so i am not sure. What number property did you use to get 3x+4y+3x-3y-4x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

distributive, basically you are distributing the 3 to the x and -y...one for you, and one for you... lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooh haha okay. What would be the next step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well if you were supposed to solve for a variable or something you would need it to be equal to something. If it equaled zero to begin with you could add all the x terms and all the y terms....2x+y=0? then y=-2x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay...got it, im pretty sure thats what it is asking to do. so what property would those be then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello hello? can someone please help? D: i need to know what the last couple number preopertys are!
