I can't go into much details, but the main difference is that in 1776 the United States had just declared independence from the United Kingdom, while in 1870 the United States had already established long ago. The US in 1776 was not industrialized and permitted slavery in all the states, while in 1870 it was the opposite: the US was an industrial country, and slavery had just been abolished. A similarity is that the US went through wars at about the same time. The Independence War against the UK in 1776-1783, and the Civil War in 1861-1865. Big transitions occurred in both scenarios, in 1776 it was the transition of being colonies to becoming states, and in 1870 it was the transition from a slave-based economy in the south, to having slavery abolished.
