solve 1.75 divided by 12.5 using compatible numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and please tell me which compatible numbers you used

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess you could start out by trying to solve 175/125 Does that make it easier for you? You can go by 25 this way.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i don't know what that means I'm only in 5th grade and i don't have the best teacher

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's fine. I'll work you through the problem 17.5/12.5 Ignore the decimal sign 175/125 Can you see that 25 goes into both of those numbers? Or at least 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look at 175. I can count that 25 goes into it 7 times 25x7 = 175 Look at 125 I can count that 25 goes into it 5 times 25x5 = 125 Are you with me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how does that help me a compatible number is changing the numbers to something that can be solved mentally like 49.6 divided by 6 changes to 48 divided by 6 = 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks tho

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is not a simple number like 6. This is 7/5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

= 1.4. But that is not mental. The mental part is to find 7/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well you estimate the decimal so it changes to a number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OKay OKay. 17.5 and 12.5 Can that be simplified to 18/12?
