Functions f(x) and g(x) are shown below. f(x) = x2 g(x) = x2 − 8x + 16 In which direction and by how many units should f(x) be shifted to obtain g(x)?

@sunnyymarie help ?

OpenStudy (zehanz):

Rewrite g as \(g(x)=(x-4)^{2}\) (completing the square). Now the number of units will be 4 or -4 (i.e. it is shifted 4 units to the right or left). To find out which one to pick, just look at f: f(0)=0. So if you put 0 in function f, it gives the result 0. If you look closely at the (new) formula for g, you'll see what x has to be to get result 0. That will give you the direction.
