An earthworm tunnel floods during a rainstorm, and the earthworm washes out onto the grass. Why will the earthworm die if it cannot get back into a tunnel quickly?

Because, if an earthworm is exposed to the sun it dies..

Earthworms are nocturnal.. And their bodies are dark brown due to the presence of a pigment known as porphyrin which protects them against bright light. That's why they can't survive in the sun.
