i am not good with finding what a poem is really about so can anyone help me find the meaning of this one? i think its a girl denying her love for someone else
I Do Not Love Thee by Caroline Elizabeth Sarah Norton I do not love thee!—no! I do not love thee! And yet when thou art absent I am sad; And envy even the bright blue sky above thee, Whose quiet stars may see thee and be glad. I do not love thee!—yet, I know not why, Whate’er thou dost seems still well done, to me: And often in my solitude I sigh That those I do love are not more like thee! I do not love thee!—yet, when thou art gone, I hate the sound (though those who speak be dear) Which breaks the lingering echo of the tone Thy voice of music leaves upon my ear. I do not love thee!—yet thy speaking eyes, With their deep, bright, and most expressive blue, Between me and the midnight heaven arise, Oftener than any eyes I ever knew. I know I do not love thee! yet, alas! Others will scarcely trust my candid heart; And oft I catch them smiling as they pass, Because they see me gazing where thou art.
Yeah I think you are exactly right. The author is denying her love for someone.
thanks and im having trouble finding the poetic device cuz we never went over them in class so can you explain them to me / or tell me what poetic device in this poem is? @jagatuba
Well there are a lot of poetic devices and I'm sure that you went over them or they are at least in your textbook. I'm a teacher and we do not assign questions to students without covering the subject matter that the question deals with. I'm not going to go over all the poetic devices with you, but I will give you an example of on device that is used. One poetic device that this poem uses (and there are more) is repetition. In each verse she starts with "I do not love thee!" Repetition is used in this poem to strengthen the feeling of denial that the author is trying to convey. Think about if the poem only said "I do not love thee" one time. As I said the poem uses several other devices, but you will have to figure those ones out on your own. If you don't have your textbook handy, you can use this as a reference: http://www.chaparralpoets.org/devices.pdf
ohhhh! yes your right we did. i think i just needed a refresher thanks lol @jagatuba
