What is the difference between 1-var stats and 2-var stats?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"1-var stats" is primarily focused on the distribution of some random variable whereas "2-var" will of course instead be interested in the relationship between the distributions of two random variables

I'm having a brain fart...so when do we use 1-var vs 2-var (typically)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, if I gave you some list of simple data -- like IQ scores, or heights, or whatever -- you would use "1-var stats" to find out information about its spread (standard deviation, variance, interquartile range, etc.), its center (mean, median, etc.), and what not. it focuses the distribution of some random variable. "2-var stats" pretty much does this same thing except for two independent lists of data at the same time; once you know about the distributions of both say \(X,Y\) you can find e.g. the least-squares line of best fit among other things. the goal now is to see how the two variables *relate* to one another rather than just how they vary independently
