The United States got access to the Panama Canal in 1904. President Theodore Roosevelt purchased the excavations and the equipment from the French for a price of $40 million. The United States also paid the county of Panama $10 million each year. The work on the canal began on May 4 of 1904. The purchase price included the Panama Railroad. The Panama Canal is 48 miles long. It connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. ~ask.com
