How many significant figures are in the measurement 1.50 mL? A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. Unlimited Im gona guess 3? is that correct?
@jdoe0001
A non-zero digit is always significant. That means the 1 and the 5 are significant. The question now is whether the zero is significant. A place holder zero is not significant. A non-place holder zero is significant. Is the 0 to the right a place holder or not? To answer that, answer this question. Are 1.5 and 1.50 the same number in arithmetic? If they are the same number, that means the zero is not a place holder, and, therefore it is significant.
hmmm im thinking the answe is 1 now.
Wait. Just from the 1 and 5, there are for sure at least 2 significant figures in the number 1.50. The question is only if there is one more significant figure or not. Is the zero also significant? If so there are 3 significant figures. If the zero is not significant, there are only 2 significant figures.
okay, are you sure theirs not 3?
