Anarchy caused the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the only short-term cause. Alliances turned the initially small (Austria-Hungary VS Serbia) war into a full-fledged European and eventually world war. I remember the causes with the the acronym MAIN M- Militarism A- Assassination of Franz Ferdinand I- Imperialism N- Nationalism
