algebra 2 question!! Simplify the rational expression & state any restrictions on the variable?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\ \frac{ p^2-4p-32 }{ p+4 }\]

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Why must there be any restrictions on the variable?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First you have to simplify the numberator, which is p^2 - 4p - 32 You have to do reverse foil on this. If I said you can simplify that to (p-8)(p-4), would that make sense to you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@skullpatrol To prevent division by zero, perhaps?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Most definitely @ChristopherToni

|dw:1389706704712:dw|, I may need a refresher on this but I believe there is a hole at p=-4
