Prior to the French invasion of Russia in 1812, all of Europe between the Pyrenees mountains and the river Vistula (modern Poland), with the exception of Sweden and lands controlled by the Ottoman Empire, was composed of satellites, puppets, allies (some, such as Prussia and Austria, forced), of France,or territory directly annexed to France. French troops also still occupied much of Spain at this time.
