Which of the following statements best describes the graph of x + y = 4? It is a line which intersects the x axis at (4, 4). It is a line which intersects the y axis at (4, 4). It is a line joining the points whose x and y coordinates add up to 8. It is a line joining the points whose x and y coordinates add up to 4.
DG: Rather than look at the possible answers, I'd jump in and graph the function first. Then it'd be relatively easy to choose the right answer. If you're willing to do that, graph x+y=4 using whichever method you're comfy with.
Hint: You could practically do this by inspection: If x=0, y=4, and if y=0, x=4. Graph those 2 points, please, and connect them with a line.
Okay, let me try to graph those.
I should have re-written those points as (0,4) and (4,0), for clarity.
I see you've graphed y=x-4. Is that equivalent to the relationship x+y=4?
DG: Wow, that online graphing utility is mighty nice! But I think you'd benefit more, in this case, if you'd please graph the 2 points mentioned above and then connect them with a straight line. Do that on paper. then compare your graph with the one you got by computer graphics.
I think it is equivalent to eh relationship because I changed it to slope-intercept form.
You graphed x-4. But if we solve x+y=4 for y, we get 4-x, wouldn't you say?
x + y = 4 -x = -x ---------------- y = 4 - x
Either graph those 2 points and connect them with a line, or use your graphing utility to graph 4-x.
Okay. I got it now. Thanks, and I am satisfied. :3
I'm glad. But we have yet to go through those 4 possible answers and to choose the correct one. You game for that?
I thought it essential that you have a clear picture of the graph of x+y=4 before trying to choose the correct answer.
I actually think I can do this on muh own. re, ill try. \o/ I also have to hurry up it's 11:40 pm.
