I have a good understanding but I'm lost on how to answer it. In your own words, explain why the direction along which the electromagnetic wave travels is not the same as the direction along which the changing electric field is applied. @douglaswinslowcooper

The changing electric and magnetic fields are changing at right angles to each other and to the third direction, the direction of propagation. A light ray in the x direction would have its E and B fields in the y-z plane.

Light, E/M waves, are transverse waves, with their E and B fields fluctuating transverse (right angles to) the direction of propagation. Fundamental nature of them. Sound waves fluctuate in the direction of propagation, for example.
