The purpose of photosynthesis is to capture the energy from the sun and to store the energy in a carbon compound.

o It is transferred to consumers (herbivores and omnivores) when they eat this plant food (matter).

o When other consumers (carnivores and omnivores), higher up the food web, consume these plant-eating organisms. This potential energy (matter) is transferred. This can be converted back to energy.
