Help please! I keep getting a wrong answer. The closest I can get is an answer of -5, and I need to have an answer = -7. Here is the problem: Three-fourths was subtracted from a number, and then 5 was added to the result. The sum was -7. What was the original number? THanks!! xoxo

I think the answer should be -11 1/2, but that doesn't work

OpenStudy (phi):

Three-fourths was subtracted from a number, means -¾ + x then 5 was added means -¾ + x+5 The sum was -7. so you have -¾ + x+5 = -7

multiple choice answers are: - 3 1/2, 3 1/2, -11 1/2, or 2 1/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer is - 3 1/2 right?

OpenStudy (phi):

There appears to be a typo in the question (or answer). the answer would be -11 ¼

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me check

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in the original question, it should be 5 1/4 NOT 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

apologize

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 5 1/4 was added, not 5
