Well, it says, "pick the x" so just choose any value you would like for x, and then find y. For example, my favorite number is 7, so I will use 7.

7(7) - 5 = y

49 - 5 = y

y = 44

Yeah, that was part of the instructions. I'm guessing you are in Algebra I? Your teacher probably wants you to practice plugging in numbers in equations.
