the oceanic plate is forced beneath the continental plate. The oceanic plate is denser than the continental plate, making it sink. A good example of this is the west coast of south america. The oceanic plate sinks, and when the water that gets "dragged" under gets to boiling point, it creates explosive volcanos. Chile and Peru's coast are all mountains which are associated with those events.
