PEMDAS. 
Always do parentheses first, exponents second, multiplication third, division fourth, adding fifth, and subtraction last. 

With that, you have your problem: 
42-4x(2+2) -Add.
42-4x(4) - Multiply.  
42-16 - Now subtract. 
26 is now your answer.
