describe the difference between the light dependent and the light independent reactions

Well there are multiple differences, the name suggest one. That the energy source for the light dependent is light (Planck's relation) the other use ATP and NADPH.

OpenStudy (frostbite):

Other differences could be that the Calvin cycle is to create the carbon skeleton of the carbonhydrates interest, while the light dependent reaction only functions to convert energy.
