In humans, there are 46 chromosomes in a body cell. A process called meiosis makes sure that when a gamete is made, the sperm or the egg cell each only has 23 chromosomes, half of the original number, so that when they join to form a zygote when fertilization occurs, the zygote will have a total of 46 chromosomes, like every cell in a human does. So the answer is 23. 

Depending on the species of the organism, however, the number of chromosomes in a gamete will vary.

C should be correct. Here are the reasons why the others cannot be correct.
a-The complexity of an organism dos not depend on the number of chromosomes, if mollies fish and humans are considered.
b-chromosomes are only found in the nucleus.
d-chromosomes are composed of DNA and protein in any case.
