Procedure:
1. Discuss with another student, parent/guardian, or a friend a common activity the two of you share that can be completed faster by working together. Running miles or swimming laps cannot be done faster by working together. Painting a room, building a sandcastle, or aphabetizing your files can be done faster with someone helping.

2. Write a word problem describing the time it takes to complete this activity individually and together.

For example, if John takes 2 hours to mow his lawn and it takes his sister, Maria, 4 hours to mow the same lawn, how long would it take John and Maria to mow the lawn together?

3. Write a rational equation based upon the word problem you created.

The rational equation based upon the scenario above would be.  1 + 1 = 1
